An Enormous Leap of Faith

Exactly two months ago, our family left the lovely place that we called home for around five years. During that day and the last weeks before that, my husband and I were so stressed out. The house that we were renting had to be renovated and the scaffolding had been built around the house a couple of weeks before we left.

The fact that the holiday season was already approaching, we had to keep whatever amount of money that we had to survive the weeks that we wouldn’t have income because my husband’s employment status is a “no work, no pay”. To be honest, we wouldn’t afford to pay the bond for a 2-bedroom house in Auckland at that time and it’s been hard to find a decent house for rent in Auckland that would be $400 per week or less. So we thought of moving out of Auckland.

We had always wanted to try living in Central Otago — Cromwell or Alexandra or even Dunedin — but the rentals would not be far from Auckland’s. So it was definitely a “No” or perhaps “Not yet!”

Since my husband’s employer allowed him to work remotely, we considered New Plymouth in Taranaki (5-6 hours drive from Auckland). I spent a week of contacting landlords and agents to schedule some house viewings on a Friday. We had a long Friday of pure road trip with house viewings in between with our two young boys (who were so good and cooperative during our whole travel). We found a house in Inglewood (several minutes away from New Plymouth). We liked the house. It was for only $250 per week. The town centre was just two blocks away. The Playcentre was on the next street. The people seemed to be nice. However, we didn’t hear back from the agent on the day that she promised to call us.

We were rushing to move out because we were concerned about the safety of our young boys and it’s summer so it was the time of the year when we could spend more time outside.

So at night after the day that the agent was expected to call us, my husband and I discussed about considering Timaru (in South Canterbury, South Island of NZ). It was already past midnight and we were still looking through the listings of houses for rent and computing for the moving expenses.

Next day, I found myself talking to some agents in Timaru. None of them would accept our application because they wanted us to view the house first. Yes, we were decided to apply for tenancy without seeing the house that we would be renting. We were that desperate!

Then my husband and I came across a listing for a short-term tenancy because that beautiful 3-bedroom house was already in the market waiting to be sold. I called the agent. I explained about our situation. She was very kind. She asked me if I was sure to apply for a house without even viewing it first. She told me she’d speak to the landlord and would get back to me perhaps in the afternoon or the following day. Less than an hour later, she called me back. She said we could apply for the tenancy. In the next few hours, we had an email with the tenancy agreement that we should sign!

That night, my husband and I continued planning for our next steps. We purchased tickets for the ferry. We discussed about having a garage sale on weekend. We planned to sell almost everything because it would cost us almost $4000-$5000 if we would take everything with us. We ended up giving and donating heaps of stuff and even putting heaps in the bin because they weren’t sold. I was worried and I was exhausted. But then, I thought that it would mean that we could have a fresh start in Timaru and organising the house would be so much easier.

The next day, I received a message from the agent in Inglewood (Taranaki) saying that she was about to prepare our tenancy agreement. Come on! My husband and I were already having some anxiety attacks while waiting for her call. No, we wouldn’t trade our chance to experience living in South Island!

Oh well, the truth is that we had never been here in Timaru before we moved here! Moreover, we didn’t know anyone here in Timaru. So yes, it was an ENORMOUS LEAP OF FAITH!!! Or you might want to call us crazy???

It’s almost two months now since we arrived. Do we like Timaru? WE LOVE IT!!! On Friday, we are moving again!!! It’s still in Timaru and the house is for a long-term tenancy this time. This house that has given us shelter was sold a week after we found a new house.

It’s only been two months yet we have been blessed with very wonderful people from our neighbourhood, from Playcentre, from our nature-based outdoor playgroup and of course from the church. My son has already been settling in well, happy and loved at kindy. My husband and I have been starting to have our own groups of very supportive church people. It feels like we are indeed meant to live here in Timaru.

When we fully allow our fate to be led by our full trust and faith in God’s Will and faithfulness, we open our lives to surprising blessings that have been in store for us. We may feel that we’ve still got some unbearable burdens but the joy and peace in our hearts are overflowing. That’s because we have given God the freedom to fully work in our lives in His mysterious ways.

So when you find a huge gap between now and the future, be brave to take that enormous leap of faith and you might also find yourself in your own heaven here on earth.

Warning: Long Article! But this might help you or someone…

Each time someone hears about the journey that I’ve had since the beginning of this year, I am being told that I should write about it. A few of those people told me that I should write about it because a doctor who could be interested in my case might read it. Others would say that I should write about it because it could be very inpiring for those who are suffering from similar conditions. So yes, I am writing about it now because it might help someone (including myself) in one way or another. I am writing about it because I desire to give hope to others.

So this article is about how I think I have seemed to recover from “whatever it was that happened to me”. Yes, “whatever it was that happened to me” because there is still no final diagnosis up until now. At first, they thought I had Guillaine-Barré Syndrome but when they found out that the acetylcholine level in my blood was so high, they thought it could be Myasthenia Gravis; however, the other test results could not prove it. For a more detailed story about what happened to me at first, you might want to read this: The Longest Eight Days of My Life.

As every cloud has a silver lining and as there is usually a colourful rainbow after the rain, there is always hope and God is always with us whom we should hold on to during the storms in our lives.

Almost eleven months later, I have seemed to be back to my normal self. I can move around without a walker or a walking stick. I can do most of the household chores. I can take my two wee ones on bus, train and/or ferry rides. We can attend the Playcentre sessions again after a couple of terms off. So what could have helped me?

First, I want to make it clear that I am not sure if I have completely recovered now or if I have been free from any of those dreaded conditions because I have still been experiencing pains and weaknesses almost every single day. I’m just thankful that the pains are somewhat tolerable now. So what could have helped me to somehow recover?

I cannot pinpoint a single thing as a matter of fact. It can be a combination of everything that I had to do. I had therapies. I had to drink Ensure (nutritional drink) at least twice daily. And I’ve had to manage my own energy level.

I had occupational therapy sessions for almost three months. I relearnt to get up from bed on my own, to get up from sitting position, to safely stand and walk on my own. I used a walker for almost two months then transitioned to a walking stick which I opted not to use all the time. I seldom used it for less than a month. I relearnt to independently look after my personal needs — from having someone to assist me in the shower and in toileting for almost two months to being able to be safe in the shower on my own, from not being able to comb my hair to being able to actually cut it, from not being able to change clothes on my own to being able to do everything for myself all by myself. I was helped to be able to do the household chores again — we started from folding the clean clothes to hanging the washed clothes to washing the dishes to cooking until I can do almost everything in the house again. And of course, I was helped to be able to look after my children again and that was at the very top of the priorities and goals that we listed during our first session.

I had physiotherapy sessions at least twice weekly for almost three months. It helped in strengthening my body — from the core to my arms and legs to my fingers and toes. My physiotherapist was the one who took me out for walks — started from five metres to a hundred metres then uphills and downhills then up and down the stairs. Each session was exhausting but it was worth it. There were sessions when we had to stop because of severe pains on my legs and arms. I had special sessions once a week to strengthen my arms and fingers which helped me to be able to write again.

I had speech and language therapy which helped me in swallowing and in being able to easily produce the sounds of some letters.

I had some psychotherapy sessions, as well. It was actually a big help to me. While everybody had seemed to see me as being happy and still well-composed in the midst of everything that happened, I opted to see a psychiatrist because I felt that I was already falling apart inside. I reached the point when my psychiatrist asked me to talk to our GP about taking some antidepressants; thankfully, I didn’t have to. Our GP and my neurologists said I didn’t have to take antidepressants because the level of my depression and anxiety were all relatively normal for someone who’s been challenged in health. They told me that I just have to talk about how I feel and what I think. If you’ve reached reading up to this point and you have been suffering from any illnesses or challenges in life, don’t hesitate to see a psychiatrist. Don’t be ashamed of doing something that can actually help you.

I also had to see a dietitian who set the goal for me to at least slightly reach my usual weight again within a month. My usual weight was 45kg. It went down to 41kg. I never lost appetite but yes, I still lost a huge amount of weight. I’ve had my own theory: since I experienced weakness in my muscles, my stomach muscles could have been weakened too so the food that I was taking in might not have been being digested properly. As I mentioned earlier, I had to drink ensure at least twice daily. It actually helped! Was I able to reach the goal? Fail! I went up to 43kg though. However, I am around 45kg now. Cheers to my body for doing a great job these days.

Yes, I had to go through a lot. And one important thing that all my therapists advised me is to be mindful of my strength and energy level — meaning not to push myself too hard. This is actually the most difficult thing to do. The problem with me is that I have the tendency to do everything that I plan to do all at once and I guess that was what brought me to such ordeal. I abuse myself. I don’t listen to my body. I just wanted to get things done because it gives me a sense of my self-worth and I hate to be criticised (by my husband). A month after I gave birth to our second child, I was already washing our clothes. Around three or four months after I gave birth, I decided to rearrange our house — I pushed huge cabinets around, I transferred huge cabinets from one room to another. I was vacuuming the house, etc. And I did all of those while breastfeeding my baby in between, looking after my two boys, playing with them, attending Playcentre sessions and completing my assessments in the course that I was trying to finish. Yes, I have grown into the kind of person who ignores my body to be able to do what I had planned to.

Indeed, life has its own way to teach us the important lessons in life!

Anyway, perhaps you are wondering if I have taken any medications. Only paracetamol and ibuprofen for pains. There were weeks when I had to regularly take them because my headaches and the pains on my back, legs and arms weren’t going away. Well, even if I was taking those medicines, the pains wouldn’t still go away most of the time. I had to take something for heartburn and acid reflux for a month. Other than those medications, nothing at all that was specific to any kind of illness. My neurologists almost gave me mestinon or prednisone, a couple of medications for Myasthenia Gravis; however, thankfully again, they hesitated and asked me to try to keep going without them because they didn’t want me to take them since I would have to take other medications for the possible side effects of those medicines. Also, they had seen that I was improving with all the therapies and nutritional adjustments that I was doing.

In fairness to my neurologists, I love how they have handled my case. I am aware how they have been thoroughly studying my case. There was even a time when someone from the team of neurologists that looked after me mentioned that a number of senior neurologists had a meeting to discuss what could have been happening to me.

It has been a long journey for me (this article too, eh?!) and our family. I’m not sure what the final diagnosis is going to be or if they will ever get to a conclusion. The thing is that if they can’t identify my symptoms and their findings with any other known illnesses or conditions, they might not be able to have a final diagnosis. But the truth is that I am not sure if I still want them to be able to diagnose me with a certain illness or condition since I have already been better nowadays. I am only praying that nothing similar to what happened months ago will happen to me again.

So if you are still reading this and if you are in a somewhat similar situation as mine, do every possible thing that you can to help yourself. Don’t depend too much on the diagnosis. Don’t just stick to the options of being treated with medicines. Medications can help but every medicine has its side effects too.

Also, keep going even if you feel like you are blinded or like you are in a dark tunnel. Most importantly, trust in God. Hold on to Him. After all, He gave this life to us and life has to be lived no matter what the situation is — not always easy though. And…

How It Is To Live And Raise A Family in New Zealand (2nd Part of Part 2: Our Family, A Team… Pregnancy and Birth)

This is the second of the series where I’ll write about how we live (or survive perhaps) as a family away from our families and relatives in the Philippines.

There’s a baby and it’s a boy!

When my first ever pregnancy test came back positive, I knew beforehand that it would come back positive. Two weeks before I took that test, I already felt that something different was happening inside my body. We did not tell anyone yet until it was confirmed by our GP (family doctor). My husband and I were very excited, of course! But we were also very nervous. Moreover, I was overwhelmed in both positive and negative ways because I was working on a project as a volunteer in a non-profit organisation where we were coming up with a tutoring program for the refugees and an ESL program specifically for Japanese migrants here. But as most mothers would surely agree with me, having a baby inside me gave me the most wonderful feeling ever. The second one was more of a surprise. We were in the Philippines when I felt that something was happening inside me. My husband and I did the test that turned out positive on the day before our flight back to NZ. We kept quiet until another test came back positive a week after we were back here in NZ.

In our experience here in NZ, as soon as the pregnancy test that we had at home turned out positive, we saw our GP to have it confirmed. Then our GP ordered me to undergo some blood tests and a scan (that’s how ultrasound is called here). Then I was prescribed to take folic acid, iodine and iron supplements.

My babies and I were under the care of our GP for most of the first trimester until I found a midwife. Finding a midwife here wasn’t easy based on my experience. My baby was due in June and winter starts in June here. When I rang almost five midwives, they were either “fully-booked” or going overseas for holiday (perhaps to somewhere warm). Yes, the lead maternity carer here is usually a midwife unless it is considered a high-risk pregnancy.

I had different Lead Maternity Carers (LMC) in my two pregnancies. The first one was in West Auckland and the second one was closer to our place. I loved the partner midwife of my first LMC. She was the one who helped my first-born to come out into this world. I would have asked her to become my LMC if she was still here in Auckland. I also loved my second LMC. She was very calm up to the extent of me imagining her as a great meditation guru.

My first pregnancy was difficult. I was experiencing nausea and all-day morning sickness almost in my entire pregnancy. I had some false alarms towards my due date as spots of blood would come out several times a couple of weeks before I gave birth. My second pregnancy was easier during the first half as I was even able to still go out and about with my first child and to still attend the workshops to finish some modules in the Playcentre course that I was completing at that time. It started to appear complicated when I had a bit of a fall down a ramp. I was admitted in the hospital for three days at my 28th week of pregnancy because a test indicating that the baby might come out early came back positive. They had to give me steroids to prepare the baby’s lungs in case he would have to come out prematurely. I had to come back to hospital almost twice a week for a month to be monitored. They had to do several anatomy scans during the last couple of months of my pregnancy to make sure that the baby was still growing and developing well inside. I was already being seen by obstetricians in the hospital then and they were coordinating with my midwife. Thankfully, both of my babies decided to stay inside me until their 38th week.

During my first pregnancy, my husband and I attended several nights of antenatal classes and I attended some sessions of pregnancy yoga on Saturdays. I only had the drive to do some walking during the last trimester of my first pregnancy but I managed to walk a lot during my second pregnancy.

OK, so how was my labour? And how did I give birth?

During my labour in the birthing suite, this was one of my positions next to standing on the floor.

My husband and I did not experience those “driving-fast-to-hospital-because-my-water-bag-broke” scenes in the movies. During my first pregnancy, I was in the hospital for two nights already before the big day because of the spots of blood that I had. The obstetrician was even considering to induce me. During my second pregnancy, my midwife asked me to go to hospital early in the morning on the day that I gave birth because it seemed like I was already in labour.

Both labours were indeed hard work, however, my boys did not let me suffer from labour pains for more than 6 hours. Moreover, they did not make me push as hard and long as the ones being portrayed in movies. Both came out through normal vaginal deliveries and I did not need any pain relief or epidural in both. There were no screaming inside the birthing suites as I also did not want anyone to be talking to me. I wanted complete silence! My first midwife made me stand for almost two hours while I was having those tremendous labour pains. She did not allow me to lie down or sit down. Gravity was indeed very helpful. Within 15 or 20 minutes after my water bag broke, our first-born came out. My second midwife had to pop my water bag as she believed that it would be helpful for my baby to go down quicker. I was lying down for most part during my active labour stage in the second one as I felt like I was already running out of strength and energy. I literally felt like I was dying soon at that time. Obviously, I did not! However, I did not have to actually push more than twice as my second son performed a great sprint when he was coming out. I am really, really thankful to my sons, to my midwives and to my husband who was present during the whole process (from making babies to taking care of them).

Motherhood is a privilege and the greatest blessing from God.

During both of my pregnancies up to labour and birth of our sons, we did not have anyone to live with us as a support person. It was just me and my husband the whole time. We shared in household chores. My husband couldn’t even go to work sometimes because I wasn’t feeling so well or I needed him to accompany me to my check-up or to be with our first-born in the Playcentre. It was never easy for us but, as I wrote in my previous posts, being just us most of the time in those very challenging times has been wonderful. We continuously learn to hold on to each other and work together so that we can raise our family well.

There were times when we also asked for help and support from our families back in the Philippines and from the people who have been close to us here in NZ. We can say that we have had great support network here. It may not be the same as the ones whose families are just around the corner but the people whom we’ve had here are really great help to us. And we are forever grateful to them.

In both of my pregnancy, labour and birth experiences, I can say that we encountered big challenges. I had excruciating pains (who knows, my sons might have felt pains too). My husband had to deal with my mood swings and he has also had to adjust his lifestyle (i.e. no triathlons for three years now). However, in the midst of all the difficult years that we have had, I have no doubt that we are a family… that we are a team.

Side notes: We did not have to pay any of my antenatal check-ups with our GP and midwives. Blood tests and flu/whooping cough vaccines were free when I was pregnant. Antenatal classes were free. We never even had to pay the hospitals when I gave birth. We had to pay for scans and pregnancy yoga classes, anyway. (OK, my husband and I have permanent resident visa here. I’m not sure how it is for those with work visa.)

How It Is To Live And Raise A Family in New Zealand (1st Part of Part 2: Our Family, A Team…The Beginning)

My husband and I got married here. We did 90% of our wedding preparations. We coordinated with the church where we wanted to get married. We searched together for the venue where we wanted to have our reception. We made our own invitations. We bought my gown and his suit together. I personalised the wedding ceremony that was shared to us by our priest/celebrant. My husband prepared the playlist of all the songs for both the ceremony and reception. One day before our wedding, we were travelling around Auckland to purchase all the flowers that were arranged free of charge by a very kind family friend. On that same day, we picked up the bridal car that we rented. Then I went to the house of my aunt-in-law where I slept that night.

Wedding Day. I woke up early in the morning. Yes, I was able to sleep well because I got exhausted from everything that we had to do in the past weeks or perhaps months. I had breakfast, prepared all that I needed, took a bath and had lunch. Then I started to style my hair and to do my own make-up. Yes, I didn’t have a hairstylist and/or a make-up artist but I had my matron-of-honour and a bridesmaid who assisted me. My cousin-in-law put the nail polish on me the night before. I put my gown and veil on. One and a half hour before the wedding, I was all set and ready to go to the church. I loved how all my preparations that day all went. I was relaxed because I was able to do everything my way — particularly my hair and make-up!

One of our godfathers drove me to the church. I didn’t have my family or any relatives here even during our wedding. I walked down the aisle on my own. However, I was still fortunate enough to have a close family friend living here for nearly a decade to wait for me at the front and to hand me over to my groom at the altar. The wedding ceremony went on as we wished — simple and solemn with some laughters.

It actually takes three to tango when it comes to marriage — husband, wife and God.

It was a beautiful summer day in this country where my husband and I have chosen to build our own family.

Our reception was simple yet elegant as planned. It was in a marquee installed outside a restaurant that served our food. We all enjoyed our individual pre-ordered three-course meals. Yes, we asked our guests to inform us about their choice of the set of meal when they RSVP’d because we limited our number of guests to 50 for financial reason of course. Then we had a simple programme — cutting of the wedding cake, first dance as husband and wife, throwing of bouquet and garter, a song performance by a friend, and a couple of speeches.  Two of our friends volunteered themselves to become the emcees.

I decided to write about our wedding as part of the blog series that I have been striving to complete because, through our wedding, my husband and I were able to practice one very important trait of New Zealanders — that is their “do-it-yourself” attitude. And through our wedding, we felt and witnessed another very wonderful attitude of the people here in New Zealand — that is helping one another without expecting for any return. Last and most importantly, our wedding was an undoubtedly great event in our lives here in New Zealand not only because it was our wedding but because, through our wedding, my husband and I truly worked as a team — a team that is still being strengthened through life’s trials and challenges.

Since day 1, my husband and I have been working hand in hand as a team.

Yes, We are husband and wife… We are a family… We are a team. And teamwork has indeed helped us to survive in our very challenging life away from our families and relatives back in the Philippines.

Thirty-Five

Thirty-five gems for my sons:

  1. There is indeed one Supreme Being — God, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit…for others, Allah, Jehovah, Buddha,… Different names perhaps… but there’s indeed one Supreme Being and He is our Father and He loves us.
  2. Have a strong faith in God for nothing is impossible with  Him.
  3. Respect other people’s choice of religion. Religion doesn’t define who’s good and who’s not.
  4. Fire is to Gold as Pressure is to Diamond as Adversity is to Man. One day, life will make you comprehend what this means.
  5. People matter over matters.
  6. Let your greatness be defined by your goodness and kindness to everyone and everything that breathes, not by wealth nor fame nor power.
  7. Marry only one woman. Then love only the woman whom you’d marry.
  8. Your father has been an excellent Daddy to both of you. That should be more than enough for your future children to also have a great Dad!
  9. We are not only beneficiaries of Mother Nature; we are created as stewards of all God’s creations.
  10. It is OK to rest sometimes. Be kind and gentle to yourselves.
  11. Expect that you will commit mistakes. Once you do…admit and correct them then avoid doing them again.
  12. Love your brother and be there for one another…all the time!
  13. Your Daddy and I have been doing our best to build a strong foundation for you. It will be up to you what and how you will build on it.
  14. The universe does not have a centre. This means you are not the centre of the universe.
  15. Keep your feet on the ground (figuratively). You can literally climb up a tree if you want to. But keep your feet on the ground (yes again, figuratively).
  16. You are unique. Based on the standards set by any society, you might either be better or less than the others…don’t bother too much about it. You are unique.
  17. You are and will always be special to me and to your Daddy. I hope that’s more than enough for your self-esteem.
  18. Everbody’s unique. Respect. It’s all about respect.
  19. You might want to be a doctor or engineer or farmer or builder or truck driver, etc.. Choose  to be any of those but please be a good man always.
  20. The best opportunity that life will present to you is the opportunity to help. Always grab it.
  21. At one point or another in your life, you will need help. Be humble and wise enough to ask for it.
  22. You have always been blessed and you will always be. Share your blessings. Pass them on.
  23. Your Daddy and I have been educating you since you’re very little. Therefore, you have no reason to act like uneducated. Being well-mannered and politeness are the keys.
  24. Find ways to explore the world without spending too much money.
  25. You might be able to afford a huge house. Don’t let it define you. It’s how you treat everyone who knocks on your door or who enters your house that will define you.
  26. Life can be unfair. So do your best to be fair to everyone.
  27. Life itself can be tough. So be gentle to yourself and to everyone.
  28. Pray. Don’t just recite prayers. Talk to God the way you talk to your best friend.
  29. Be yourself. But in the process of being yourself, never harm nor hurt anyone else.
  30. Live. Let live.
  31. When you have to, let go and let God.
  32. I trust you.
  33. I love you so much.
  34. Again, I love you.
  35. In case you’ve already forgotten, I LOVE YOU!
